About this Course

"During this course I demonstrate my oil painting process step-by-step while painting the portrait and studying certain features. Every brush stroke is documented and questions are answered throughout the session.

We begin the first lesson with an intro to form and a warm up painting exercise, followed by painting from photographs using a limited palette. Limiting the palette can allow for a freedom to explore while maintaining color harmony throughout the painting. The demos cover everything from the drawing stage, blocking in color, rendering, and refinement. We also touch upon the elements of design including: line, shape, value, color and texture during the process".

Your instructor

Emilio Villalba's journey through the colorful spectrum of art has culminated in a deep understanding of the power of a restrained palette. With roots in Mexican-American heritage and a childhood immersed in Southern California's vibrant culture, Emilio transitioned from a successful stint in Los Angeles as a visual-effects animator to pursuing the raw authenticity of fine art in San Francisco. His passion for teaching is fueled by his rich experiences in both digital and traditional art forms, enabling him to guide students with a nuanced approach to color and composition.

In the studio and the classroom, Emilio draws upon the wisdom of past maestros and the boldness of contemporary trailblazers, channeling the essence of Velázquez's classic finesse, Alice Neel's emotional portraiture, and Basquiat's urban intensity into his teachings. Committed to the art of figurative painting, he mentors with an enthusiasm that ignites curiosity and challenges students to harness the evocative potential of a limited color scheme, fostering an environment where each stroke and hue tells a profound story.
